What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

A Brief History
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of healing that has been practiced for over 2500 years.   Ancient healers of natural medicine learned through observation how the elements and forces of nature interact in ever-changing systems.  By applying these principles of nature a system of medical theories and effective methods of treatment evolved.  A massive literature of books and journals containing theories and clinical experiences continue to be referenced and translated into English.  TCM has been used in Europe for the past 100 years and continues to gain acceptance as an effective, safe and cost-conscious, healthcare option.

As a holistic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine is focused on treating the individual who is experiencing disease. Two individuals having the same disease may have a different treatment. No matter what the illness, the goal is to bring the body's system back into balance.  The Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner may use acupuncture, herbal medicine, heat therapy or physical medicine as part of the treatment.  Chronic complex disease patterns may require long term commitment to treatment whereas short term or acute ailments may be corrected with one or two treatments.

Both the World Health Organization  and National Institute of Health agree that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment modality for a number of diseases. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a comprehensive system of health care which promotes the body's natural healing ability.  Illness and discomfort are viewed as an imbalance of the physical, mental and emotional levels. Traditional Chinese Medicine is effective for relieving pain and promoting health whether treating acute or chronic conditions.
